It’s been a few years since Thomas presented at Filex but he’s back for 2018!
Known as the godfather of fitness business to many Thomas Plummer packs the rooms at any convention he presents at. Many times people are left standing or sitting on the floor.
The man is hot property and you cant question that, people vote with their feet and the feet are in the door and the bums are on seats.
Why is he in demand?
Thomas doesnt sell old tricks!
Body & Soul 24/& Gym is proud to be working along side:
The Red Gala Ball to be held in honour of the late Sue Cornish in July.
I never knew Sue however I have heard lots of lovely stories about her strengths, her favourite colour red and her courageous battle with a disease that takes the lives of many each day.
My role and my clubs role is not one of recognition but one of awareness, brain tumours take the lives of more children than any other disease. Brain tumours receive less funding than any other disease and in some cases none. Brain tumours can cancel out a persons life in a season.
In 2016 I was tagged in a post on social media by Elise Steenhuis the post asked for assistance in displaying posters for an event called The Red Gala Ball. I read a little further and noticed it was to raise funds for brain cancer awareness and research. I messaged the ladies and jumped on board. In 2013 I myself was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour and like us all when we are told we have a health issue I became the stalker of research. Sadly there’s really not been a lot accomplished in the last decade, this is because of a lack of funds. Yes, we have Dr.Charlie Teo and we have Carrie Bickmore fighting for us but who else? Lack of funds from donations and lack of funds from our government have left us to totally rely on outside sources. In a video I placed up on social media I asked the then Prime Minister Tony Abbott why we don’t get funding. Is it because the survival rate is low and dead people can’t vote. Mr. Abbott didn’t call me back and the survival rate is still low.
In my lifetime we won’t find a cure but we can lay the foundation now for a better future so that moving forward the next generation of brain tumour patients can have better choices to make with longer survival rates. I hope we can bring awareness and research to brain tumours just like The McGrath Foundation did for breast cancer.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones, I still have the power to make an impact not only through raising public awareness for research but to also educate people on the importance of health, diet and exercise through my own business. Had I not been fit and healthy I would have found out too late and surgery would have been my only option. I opt no surgery.
Lets be grateful that we have been giving this option to make a difference , big or small.
Brain Tumours Are Not Rumours They Need Funding Too.

A story of childhood, education, fitness, death and tumours.
So late on a Saturday night I was reading “Growing the Fitness Sector through Innovation “ just snippets here and there on innovation, technology and mindset. It was interesting to re-read some comments, in particular “to change mindset we must change leadership” something I feel strong on and agree with. As I made my way through the pages I realised that maybe the reason we have such an obese, unhealthy people global problem is because we’ve created it! Yes, us the fitness professional, the innovator, the media, all of us.
Technology is wearable’s, apps, virtual, and so forth, agree?
Isn’t it funny how with one hand we tell business owners they should be creating a community, tribe, social network within their club to enhance the exercise experience so members come back for more and retain…. Yet here we are on the other hand. Making them lazy! We scream and yell at them, get this app, get our app and do workouts in the comfort of your own home, go to the park and do a session, why not workout at lunchtime in your office, yeah do a workout and hi 5 your friends on the app… that you’ve never meet! – Yeah this app is amazing just push a few selections and in no time you’ll be working out on your OWN!!!!! Come do virtual classes. On your OWN!!!! Our club is 24/7 come workout anytime on your OWN!!!!! Yeah I’ll train you online, I’ll never meet you in person but I’m going change your life and make you look awesome. And maybe one day I’ll bump into you in the street…hold on, no I won’t I’ve never meet you – we have no connection.
Innovation is great providing we send the right message, maybe we need more innovation developers to think community to think tribe to think group – the message we really want to send out to the fitness industry is working out in groups is fun and rewarding and technology is a bonus. Encouraging people to workout on their own is sending people into a world of isolation and we don’t want that. Isolation causes depression, makes people socially shy and so forth. Do you realise you can’t really police how many people start working out on their own with good intentions but fail – how many people find themselves getting deeper and deeper into non existent good health because nobody was on hand to encourage – where was the social network of friends to push and encourage them on their bad days? Real people working alongside one another can create change for many. Even good intentions need a helping hand. So lets go back to the start of the page – to change mindset we need to change leadership. So how do we change the leadership or direction of those that are the innovators of change?
My opinion is this
To create a healthier world where obesity and bad health no longer out weigh the opposite we need to take a look at how we encourage people to exercise and get healthy. Perhaps one way to do this is to start developing via technology and innovation more ‘community workouts’ as opposed to working out on your own. Maybe the new trend needs to be about the “FitCom” (fitness community) and not about an icon on your phone for one.
Stop the isolation!
We can have technology we can have innovation we can have it all, but without people sharing with people a common interest we have nothing but bad health both physically and mentally.
One last thought – go back 30 years how many of us told our kids to stop playing Atari games locked in their bedroom and to get outside with their friends.
Go back 20 years – “Get off the Internet and get outside”
Go back 10 years “Get off the Nintendo” ‘But I’m playing against the kid down the street”
Go back 5 years “Get off Facebook”
Go back to yesterday – How many icons on your phone encourage you to exercise on your own?
No matter what you do in life no innovation will replace community.
Time for change, time for action, time to create new choices for fitness professionals. The future of fitness has arrived, its erratic, its fast moving it’s exciting and it’s not slowing down.
Just as fast as the industry is changing overnight so is the club owner, the exerciser and the technology we rely on. Collaboration is the key to success. Fitness professionals will now unite with new key players, sharing knowledge education and success.

Have you seen the picture of my new friend Colin?
Every time I come back from my U.S trips I can’t help but say to myself education is paramount to success not just for me but for all fitness professionals.
Some days we attend workshops to learn, sometimes we attend to re-iterate what we do is right! And sometimes we walk away and yell WHAT THE HELL…I didn’t get that at all! Every time I come back I can’t help but feel the need to take every over 40+-fitness business owner who struggles with the new era of fitness, put them in a room and educate them after all for these guys the gym business is all they know and for some the new era is a struggle, day-to-day business is a struggle, life, family and money are a struggle.
We have a duty of care to educate our #40plusfitpreneurs
Do we? Yes we do! How? Reach out to our forty plus and set up workshops, start from the beginning teach them without intimidating them, teach them social media, human resources, proven concepts with step by step guides – not stuff copied from somewhere else – not re-hashed but real education, innovation, success and failures from somebody like” ME” who has lived, lives and breathes it 24/7 – don’t just send them on there way.
Why should you listen to me you ask? I ask you why would you not? I walk my talk and I’ve visited struggle town.
I mean lets face it if you’re still reading this it’s highly likely your related to Colin.
Meet Colin, Colin owns a gym, Colin has nine other gyms in his area, Colin is in struggle town and his members are leaving.
Colin is still waiting for his dial up to connect
Don’t be a Colin – Embrace the future of fitness
Meet George, George is Colin’s brother, George is 76. George gets up every morning at 4am to pick corn. George is still waiting for the price of real estate to come down. George has missed opportunity.
Innovation, progress and time wait for nobody, the good news is it’s never to late to start. Surround yourself with those that make a difference, surround yourself with people who understand your business and your struggle, surround yourself with passionate fitness professionals just like you. Together we can make a difference.

Club owners will resonate with this. Moving staff on!
Clubs don’t get rid of good workers, clubs don’t get rid of those that pay their way. Clubs don’t get rid of team members who bring positivity to other members as well as their team. Club owners don’t get rid of those that have great work and moral ethics. Club owners get rid of those that can’t follow procedures and policy,Club owners get rid of petty behaved people who try to take the rest of the team and members on a negative journey. When staff and members are all complaining about the same person you know theres something not right. Club owners are not bullies for moving staff on because they don’t fit the philosophy and culture of the club, club owners are to be applauded for not tolerating this behaviour and protecting the environment that their team works in. At the end of the day its nature that people talk about people to say you don’t is to falsify who you are as a person, but to deliberately try to create an intense atmosphere amongst a team is not normal. In my club and in many clubs globally I have dealt with, we at times have had to read the backlash on social media and its well versed knowledge the negativity they write is the proof – it encompasses what we were saying all along – they just aren’t the right people for our culture.
Successful business doesn’t become successful from having the wrong team its becomes successful for keeping the right team.
Don’t ever feel bad for moving people on in business you have a duty of care to your team, just as much as you have a duty of care to your business….Mel Tempest
I haven’t written a blog for a while it’s not that Ive been too busy to do it – well I have been a little busy Ive just put a new 5 platform functional training zone in my club, new boxing and kids area over the xmas new year break into late Jan. Buts that not what this blog is about! I have to say I’m totally frustrated at the moment with the lack of information out there to assist club owners in growth I mean real information and real assistance. Sick of club owners being told to do this and do that at workshops yet they walk away without the tools to do so. We keep telling our members they need to be accountable for their workouts maybe we need to tell our educators at conventions to be accountable for their workshops. It’s the same old same old everything is marketed to the middle man club owner or those with more exposure than others. What about the new person on the block what about the club owner who has been in the industry for 30 years who has no idea, the club owner who has no money because he’s been buying every god dam book you the successor told him to buy. Who’s helping these guys??? Nobody you know why because they lack profile! They don’t want to sign up to a twelve month subscription that gives them weekly tips or stories re-hashed from somewhere else, this info is no good to them if they don’t know the basics and for gods sake supply these people with info from the NOW !!
Actually I’m pretty pissed with the industry here I woke the other day with the thought I don’t want to do this anymore the RTO’s have a lot to answer for in the lack of education they give new personal trainers coming into the industry with club owners having to pick up the pieces. – Stop telling these students they’re tomorrows entrepreneurs ,tell them to get educated more, give them a plan when they leave you. And it’s not just the RTO’s here it’s the fitness industry as a whole – there are a lot of amazing Australian business owners like myself who can assist club owners and health clubs to be better at business. How about the industry moves over a little and gives these people opportunity. Businesses want to be educated by those in the NOW people who walk the talk people who get it people who work in it everyday. AVERAGE EVERYDAY PEOPLE NEED HELP!
Twelve months on from my trip to IHRSA and I still have the same thoughts the Australian fitness industry has so much to learn from the Americans. Yeah sure it’s a big statement liked or hated by some and yeah I leave a little debris along the way when I speak or get the job done (the actual chosen word about me 3rd party was collateral) but thats what I do get the job done and you can’t knock me down for that, I say what others won’t I never got in this industry to be a falsified version of me – I don’t kiss butt – love it or leave it I’m practical and I get the job done.
I don’t have sour grapes just a sour taste in my mouth from an industry that puts its hand out more often than it gives out.
Until next time – Mel Tempest
